The Aura
The aura is the most dense part of the Astral Body. And the astral body is our Soul, our Ghost, the subtle form which interpenetrates and surrounds the entire physical body, including every cell and organ.
The astral body is sometimes called the desire body, because it is the source of feelings and emotions - desires. It is what stirs and motivates us. It is the source of our ideas of attraction and repulsion. This body, or vehicle, causes us to be excited, afraid or full of desires. These feelings are often quite different from, and unaffected by, our conscious mind.
The astral body is also the source of physical feelings
- pleasure and pain. In other words, if we could exist without an astral body, we would not experience pain. But neither would we experience pleasure. We would simply be aware of sensations that had no particular emotion significance or meaning.
The astral body is not as tightly locked into time and space as is the physical body. Astral consciousness flows across time and space in a manner quite alien to the common laws of physical reality. The dream state and astral travel are two examples of this state of consciousness.
The aura does not remain the same size, color or shape, but is in a constant state of flux, changing form, volume and colors to reflect altered moods and emotional/mental reactions. The aura has one or two basic colors, one's own identity, but there are many other color areas about the aura that change with one's thoughts and moods.
Various traditions describe as many as nine layers to the aura. This is a matter of doctrine and perception. The aura can extend as little as a few inches or as much as 100 feet. This depends on the evolution and vitality of the individual.
Just as the physical body has many parts, so does the astral body. In the aura we will find the chakras, the kundalini and many other parts analagus to parts in the physical body.
